Good luck with the grid-tie. I am trying to do this here but the “approved” equipment list for national grid seems to be the most expensive stuff in the world.

We are attached to marine batteries now and are trying a grid tie setup this week. It still spins quite well but we are changing the gearing soon for even more output for a 6 barrel system which is built but not vertical yet.
We are working on a controller now that adapts to the wind load by pulsing the coil.

I live in Ph. Az. valley area..
We don`t get as much wind.

Hey there, The video is very informative. I have a suggestion for you. I noticed you have used chopping boards to cut out a gear, they will wear out in sometime, I suggest you use a bycycle chain and sprockets as they will not wear out soon and also you can use a gear set up to get more power. I hope I make sense here. I am not a techy so I dont know all the proper terms here.

great idea, a smaller gear/cog on the gen should be more efficient. knowing what RPM is the most efficient for the gen would of course help.did you lube the bearings ? also a 26″ bike wheel with a belt in the rim channel driving a smaller pulley on the gen would work too.just trying to put some ideas out there. train/semi truck batteries are another option. good lookin dog if it’s a male is his name Edison ? ;o)

Although You sound like a nice person, I don’t give much for This construction.
The bearings are prone to Failure in short time and need constant oil.
Ineffective gears , and the time and costs should be better implemented!
OK, at lest You tried.
I would consult a friend with rudimentary practice and feeling before starting such a project.
Now You managed to start people on an less then optimal project – that is a pity..
Wish You well and good luck any way – You will surely need it..

The bearings need periodic lubrication, you are right. The gears however have been very durable and require no lubrication whatsoever.

Checkout the rear hub of a Pontiac Fiero as a better bearing race.. tapered on both sides with 4 mounting holes on each corner and you can alway machine down the back of the Hub to what you need.. and it’s sealed..

I tried some oldsmobile hubs a friend gave me and they had too much turning resistance.

OK well you tried ! – Is there a wall between each barrel that I cant see? Wouldn’t one increase your catching of air.. im talking the area where they overlap.. Did you cap that off?

No, I didn’t cap it off because this design actually works better if the air can exchange between the two chambers. That is part of the original Savonius design.

If you made the cogwheel on the turbine larger in diameter, wouldn’t you make the smaller one on the generator turn faster and get more power out of it?

Great job! What I like about you design is it allows for setting up multiple generators on one set of blades. What is your gear ratio? Do you have alot of resistance with this set up? Do you think you could double the power even with extra resistance by hooking up an identical generator on the opposite side? Keep up the great work.
